Growth Mindset

Last week Dr Guscott & Mrs Livesey led very successful study sessions for all Year 8 & 9 students, with the focus being the 'Growth Mindset'. The Growth Mindset is an approach to learning which believes that mindset is more important than initial ability in determining the progress made by students. Students with a growth mindset will make better progress than students with a fixed mindset.

Students with a growth mindset:-

  • Believe that talents can be developed and
    great abilities can be built
    over time
  • View mistakes as an opportunity to develop
  • Are resilient
  • Believe that effort creates success
  • Think about how they learn

Students with a fixed mindset:-

  • Believe that talent alone creates success
  • Are reluctant to take on challenges
  • Prefer to stay in their comfort zone 
  • Are fearful of making mistakes
  • Think it is important to 'look smart' in front of
    others
  • Believe that talents and abilities are set in stone, you
    either have them or you don't.

There is more information on the Headteacher’s Blog on the school website, including the presentations used with the students, and it would be great if parents and carers could help us to establish a Growth Mindset culture here at school by encouraging it at home as well.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, there are only four weeks remaining until the curtain goes up on the school production of ‘Dracula Spectacula’. The next few weeks are going to be very busy for all involved, therefore, so many thanks for all of your hard work so far, and please make sure you attend all of those important rehearsals.
