SPEECH TO YEAR 11 FROM HEAD OF YEAR LAURA MOSS

Wed, 09 May 2012

Good evening. First of all I would like to thank parents, staff, governors and Father Geoff for joining us on this very special occasion but most of all, thanks to the pupils, the class of 2012.

The theme of our mass has been journeys. Our St. James' journey began in September 2007, when you and I arrived here. We have so many happy memories of our time here: the Year 7 welcome disco, the Year 8 France trip, Alton Towers, ice skating, far too many to recount here this evening.  Just because your time at St. James' is ending, it is not the end; this is the beginning of a new, exciting journey, an adventure into young adulthood that is full of opportunity.

Your time at St. James' has been shaped by the time, support, care and guidance of your form tutors and our pastoral staff. May we take this opportunity to thanks them: Mr Devine, Mr Woods, Mrs Friend & Ms Neves, Mr O'Brien & Mrs Nolan, Mrs McGarr, Mrs Wilby and Mrs Macleod; not forgetting those form tutors along the way: Mrs Zelinka, Mr Guscott, Mr Brophy, me and, of course, the adored Miss Waggett. We must recognise the tireless work towards your success by Mrs Livesey, Mrs Hutchings and Mrs Burras as well as our Headteachers, Mr Lowry and Mr Barnes.

A year ago I was given the honour of becoming your Head of Year and I am so proud to see you all this evening in our celebration of your time here. Obviously, your immediate future is focused on working hard towards your exams and I am looking forward to celebrating your successes at your prom in July and then again at your celebration awards evening in the autumn.

Knowing I was going to be saying a few words this evening, I decided to look for an inspirational quote. For those of you that have listened in my assemblies, you will be very familiar with my motto: 'You cannot recycle wasted time', so I thought I would find you a new quotation to inspire you on your journey ahead. Instead, I found this: 'Keep it short if you want it to be remembered.' So, that is what I shall do...

Year 11, we have shared highs and we have shared lows but, throughout your five years at St James', I have rooted for each and every single one of you. Please remember this: You are brilliant. You are special. You are part of the St. James' family. Every one of you is made in God's image – go forward from here and make us, your families and yourselves proud.

Thank you.

SPEECH GIVEN AT Y11 LEAVER'S MASS

Thu, 03 May 2012

Confucius said, "Wherever you go, go with all your heart!"

Our pupils in Y11 have certainly displayed a lot of heart and dare I say, even more "GO". They have gone from strength to strength during their high school years and personified the ideal and vision of going for their personal best...albeit, some more diligently than others perhaps. You have demonstrated Creative flair, quirky behaviour and poetic license.

Some of you have achieved more than others with relative ease. Some may have had to work harder...may have had to dig deeper to find the resolve to continue to meet the challenge - and perhaps some may have let opportunities pass them by. Either way, today, you need to acknowledge where you are.

You may find that your high school years were years well spent. You may find that you regret some of the opportunities that you allowed to slip by. Acknowledge them, accept them and then prepare to move on...

Sometimes some of you needed encouragement to run and sometimes you needed us as staff to hold in the reins - yet all the while we were conscious to encourage you to relentlessly move forward, culminating in tonight. You will be going out into the world, on different paths, following different dreams.

New beginnings, new journeys and definitely new challenges to explore! You are sure to be dealing with a myriad of conflicting emotions and in the midst of all this.... you need to take a deep breath and believe, know, endure and then ultimately achieve.

Believe in yourself to the depths of your being. You have the ability, you have the skills, you have the education and you have the opportunities.

Believe always in the talents that you have nurtured over the years here at St. James’ and continue to nurture them. There is no place for complacency. There is no room for apathy. Now is not the time to sit back and relax. You must continually strive to extend yourself even further - little by little every day, every week, every month and every year.

I wish you have every success, may you work hard and play straight, may you hold your head high, may our paths still cross from time to time and may you “go with all your heart!”

Angela MacLeod
Head of Year

From February 2012 to April 2012, we are once again collecting supermarket vouchers. This time, it's the Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers, and we would be very grateful if you would send any you get our way. As ever, these vouchers are an extremely valuable source of equipment to us. These particular vouchers benefit the PE Department, and Food Technology. So, whether it's badminton rackets, netball bibs, can openers or baking sheets, every student in the school will appreciate whatever we can get.
